Creating tone with pen and ink
With a pencil you can make a wide variety of grays. You can use these to suggest the tones that you see. With pen tools you can only have black and white. However with hatching you can suggest tone. There are three different types of hatching. One directional is the simplest. Cross hatching is also possible. Contour hatching is when your hatching follows the form of the object you are drawing. The pen tools you can use these techniques with are pen and ink, fine line felt tip pen or a ball point pen (Note you can create tones with ball point pens).
